How can kids help make these easy pancakes?
This is a great recipe for kids to try. Even young children and toddlers can enjoy getting to measure and mix all the ingredients together.
If your children are a little older and are safe around a hot cooker, they might be able to help you spoon the batter into the frying pan. And of course, they’ll enjoy getting to flip the pancakes, or at least watch you do it for them!
How long do crepe style pancakes keep?
These pancakes don’t normally last long in our house, but if you want to keep them, you can pop them in an airtight container for a day or so. Heat them gently again in a frying pan or covered in foil in the oven before you serve them.
What’s the difference between American pancakes and English pancakes?
American pancakes are what I would call fluffy pancakes. They are made with a much thicker batter and use some raising agents in them. They are also a bit smaller than these. English pancakes are really just like French crepes. They’re thinner but bigger than fluffy pancakes and are perfect for rolling up with your favourite topping inside.
Topping ideas for pancakes
We like a variety of toppings in our house from golden or maple syrup to chocolate spread or jam. There’s also the classic sugar and lemon juice.
If you’d like something a little more substantial, why not try some bacon with your maple syrup or fruit (blueberries, bananas and strawberries work well.

Difficulty: Easy
Time: 10 minutes + 20 minutes cooking

Ingredients
225g (1 3/4 cups) plain / all-purpose flour
2 large eggs
500ml (2 cups) milk
Pinch of salt
How to make these easy pancakes for kids from scratch
Measure the flour into a bowl
Place a bowl on your scales, and get your toddler to measure the flour (225g) into it with a spoon. If you face the scales towards you so you can see when they’ve put enough in.
Make a well in the flour and add the eggs
Use the spoon or your hands to make a well in the middle of the flour, then add the eggs. You could either add the eggs straight into the flour, or if it’s easier/safer get your toddler to break them into a small bowl first just in case any stray shell goes in. If it does, simply fish it out with a larger piece of shell. Shell sticks to shell better than it does your finger.
Use a whisk or fork to slowly mix the eggs in, incorporating them in some of the flour.
Add the milk
Pour the milk (500ml) into a measuring jug (or use your digital scales on the ml setting to measure it more accurately), then get your kids to add it to your bowl a little at a time. Whisk as you go along until all the flour is incorporated into the mixture and you have your batter.
If you have time, leave the pancake batter to rest for five or so minutes. It will helpp any remaining lumps aborb and generally make your pancakes nicer. Don’t worry too much if you can’t wait though!
Fry the crepes/pancakes
Add a little butter or oil to a hot frying pan then use a ladle to add some batter to the pan. Swirl it around so it covers the base of the pan. Ideally, you want it to only just cover it so your crepes are nice and thin.
Cook the pancake on a medium heat for a few mintes on the first side. It’s ready to toss or turn over when it has loosened from the base of the frying pan. You can check with a fish slice if you like. Flip the pancake over and cook it for a few minutes on the other side.
If you’ve got older children who can be trusted near the heat they can help with this step.
As a fun alternative, you can try making small pancakes with some metal cookie cutters if you have them. Simply put the cookie cutters down on your frying pan, then add a little pancake batter. After they have cooked on one side, remove the cutter (be careful it’ll be hot), then flip it over. It’s a little bit fiddly, but they can be a bit more fun and interesting for little kids.
You can keep your made pancakes warm on a baking sheet in the oven or on a plate covered with a clean tea towel while you cook the rest.
Serve the pancakes jam, Nutella, syrup or lemon and sugar and enjoy.
