Does any LED driver work with any LED lights? ›

The LED light's input voltage and the LED driver's output voltage should be compatible. Check these before connecting them to avoid damage. There are also constant-current LED drivers with 6 volts to 24 volts and are suitable for some types of LED lights. Still, their compatibility is not universal.

By using a multimeter to measure both the output voltage and current, you can pinpoint discrepancies. If you find that either the voltage or the current is surpassing its intended specification, it's a likely contributor to the early burnout of the LED.

If you want to be able to dim your LEDs, be sure to buy a driver with dimming capabilities. They work by reducing the amount of power supplied to the LED, and there are two different kinds: trailing edge dimmable drivers (also known as ELV drivers) and leading edge dimmable drivers (also known as TRIAC drivers).

Overworking the power supply can cause the LEDs to flicker or cause premature failure of the power supply. Just calculate the cushion by multiplying the total wattage by 1.2.

Unless there are any visual burn marks or visually burnt components, the driver can be repaired. When a capacitor fails, the top usually bulges upward and it is no longer flat. If you see that, then for sure the capacitors need to be replaced, and although not always necessary, I always replace both of them.

Most common constant voltage drivers (or Power Supplies) are 12VDC or 24VDC. An LED light that is rated for constant voltage usually specifies the amount of input voltage it needs to operate correctly. A constant voltage power supply receives standard line voltage (120-277VAC).

The driver dims the LEDs by either shortening the amount of leading current going through it, or by a method called pulse width modulation (PWM). Most drivers that offer dimming use PWM. This allows dimming without flickering and with usually very little color change in the LEDs.
